Nita Ambani shows off her wealth, whereas Sudha Murthy shows off her simplicity. There is a spilt between the immodest simplicity of Murthys and the intemperate extravagance of Ambanis.
Sudha Murthy is simple lady who carries her own cutlery on flights to avoid touching anything that may have touched non-vegetarian food was in news for airing her bigotry.
On her hand Nita Ambani were also in news for flaunting their wealth during her son’s Anant pre-wedding bash. It is vulgarity at a scale that can hardly be comparable to anything in the world.
However, both the stories make for great public consumption, they narrate stories that inspires India ample of millions who lives in despicable poverty.
Sudha Murthy, Narayan Murthy’s ‘dutiful wife’ who sacrificed her career, metamorphosed into that grandmother who display her simplicity, modesty, literary genius and philanthropy occasionally escape into the public domain to cover up her bias.
Narayan Murthy’s saga epitomizes an entrepreneur struggle in pre-liberalized India, culminates in the success of Infosys.
On other hand Mukesh and Nita Ambani has different story to tell, they’re the beneficiary of an estate left by an ruthless first generation businessman left them with an enormous fortune.
The stories of Murthy and Ambani help deconstruct the formative art of wealth and power. Irrespective being understated or over the top, their performance provides tangible and intangible results for them.
While millions of India’s poor enthralled by the PR stunts of billionaires, particularly with stories of humanity and simplicity the real news in India is disconcerting.
There are innumerable categories of two Indias apart from rich – poor, rural-urban, north-south, hindu-muslim, employed-unemployed, veg-nonveg, hindutva-liberal, majority-minority, lower caste – upper caste and so on.
Despite all the retoric, the rich are getting richer and poor are getting poorer the rift is widening.
