Behind the scenes – Runway 34
Ajay Devgn & Amitabh Bachchan in Runway 34

Ajay Devgan out did himself both as an actor and a director. The storyline is unique, being based on a true event and the screenplay is very engaging. After watching this movie, I think Ajay Devgn is among very few actors who can pull the movie without any song or romance with his heroine.

The first part is brilliant, keeps you occupied with turbulent landing, the tension and panic is presented so amazingly on the screen. It’s an audio visual treat. He make us feel that we are on board and experiencing the same tension and fear. However, Runway 34 should be experienced for the way it depicts one of the scariest, and a near-disastrous aviation mishap in recent times with engaging characters, thrill and drama. Although there have been films shot in large and small chunks inside aircrafts, this one plays wonderfully on the audience’s psyche showing them exactly what may just go wrong if the weather doesn’t support a flight’s landing, and what can happen when decisions have to be made running against a clock.

The second part is a court room drama which has some brilliant dialogues. Ajay Devgan and Amitabh Bachchan, experienced as they are, did wonderful and the supporting actors too did a good job.

The set, costumes, music and design are of international standard, just outstanding, Ajay Devgn kept the storytelling very simple and consistent, both him and Rakul Preet were looking very smart in pilot uniforms and obiviously Amitabh Bachchan in suited booted. I think Amitabh never played such role of chief investigation officer arguing the case in his baritone voice in front of the aviation jury, grilling both Rakul & Ajay at the time of court martial. As Ajay Devgn mentioned in one of his interviews that if Amitabh Bachchan had refused to do this role he wouldn’t have made this movie and he was absolutely right in casting Mr. Bachchan as Narayan Vedant – chief investigation officer.

Also, though Boman Irani makes his presence felt he doesn’t have much scope to perform. Rakul performs her part with complete honesty, striking a fine balance between a gamut of emotions. Angira Dhar as his lawyer and Aakanksha Singh as Ajay Devgn supportive wife.

The movie keeps you engaged first half with thrill and second part with drama in equal measures. Overall, the film doesn’t spend too much time taxiing on the runway; it takes off quickly and keeps you hooked till you disembark from the theatre’s aisles.

It will make you feel as if you are watching some Hollywood movie, Ajay Devgn has given full justice as an actor, director and producer, I think it’s worth watching once.
